Most of us have injured ourselves at some point in our lives. Injuries can be a major setback. Getting hurt isn't generally a consideration when we plan to achieve something. Yet it is something that there is always potential for. I recently pulled muscles in my back and though it's been discouraging. COVID kept most of us including myself from fully training for months and now a back injury will keep me out another 6 weeks. How can someone so knowledgeable about training get injured? Truthfully it can happen to anyone. In my case it was fluke accident that occurred as I was repositioning myself for a training video. The weight I had in my hand was unevenly distributed and my focus was diverted from keeping my core tight and back neutral. As I tried to move in frame "pop" there went my back.
Injury prevention should be the number one goal for any training program. In fact it should be a key component in your daily life. Here are a few things you can do to remain injury free:
Minimize Stress
Use proper lifting techniques
Maintain proper nutrition
Sleep 8 + hours a day
Dynamically Stretch
Resistance Train
Use proper equipment for each task
Be aware of surroundings
Wear proper attire/ gear
Avoid over-training / over-working
If it hurts Stop. Do not play/ work through pain
As I noted injuries are often unexpected and extremely discouraging. The question becomes are you doing what you can to limit them? Apply the steps listed above and you will greatly reduce your injuries. Don't be a Coach Dee!
